QUANTZ, J. J.: Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen.
Berlin, Voß 1752.

4°. (7) lvs., 334 pp., (11) lvs.; (1) leaf., (12) lvs. 24 engraved plates with music, 2 engraved vignettes. Contemporary leather (rubbed, head of spine restored, joints a little broken); the music plates separately bound in contemporary wrappers. First edition of this very important traverse flute tutor and music theory; the book appeared simultaneously in German at Berlin and in French at Paris. Quantz (1697 - 1773) was a pupil of Zelenka and Fux in Vienna. In 1728 he became a tutor in Berlin for the flute to the later Prussian King Friedrich II, 1741 and was appointed official chamber musician and composer to the court. He wrote approx. 300 concertos for flute in the style of Vivaldi as well as 200 pieces of chamber music for the flute, improving the construction of the flute by the introduction of a second valve or key. His "Attempt at a manual for playing the flute traversially " is more than purely a manual for playing an instrument: It represents one of the most important writings of its time on music theory. "His rules for adornment are tied to a specific time and partly personal opinion ... His explanations regarding general ideas for performing, however, are valid for the entire European music of the late Baroque and Rococo. Many of his utterances concerning musical education, choice of career and aptitude of the instrumentalist ... remarks regarding the experiencing of music and the tasks of the componists and of the interpreter are generally valid." (MGG X, 1804). Quantz propagated the "mixed tastes", of combining the Italian art of adornment, French architecture and rhythm as well as the German art of counterpoint to form a completely new style. Multiple forms of expression, changes in the instrumentation, and variety of harmonisation through the use of dissonance alll belonged to this idea of " mixed tastes ", just as much as the "expression" of the performance itself, which he demanded of his interpreters, in order to make the thoughts present within the music itself understandable. The book was published at the same time in German and French. Minor water-staining, a good copy. RISM B VI 676.
